The War Memorial Opera House is at 301 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. It is an integral part of San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center and home to San Francisco Opera since 1932. San Francisco was the first city in the country to have an opera house owned by the municipality. The city issued four million dollars in municipal bonds to fund the design and subsequent construction in 1927. Arthur Brown Jr. was appointed to design the building. He had designed San Francisco City Hall a decade earlier. G. Albert Lansburgh was hired to design the theatre. Earlier in his career, he worked on the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco and Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium.

About War Memorial Opera House

War Memorial Opera House celebrates Beaux-Arts or Classical Revival architectural style and is one of the last of its kind in the country. The colonnade of column pairings, the massive arched windows, and rusticated basement are design elements of a bygone era and are rarely seen today, even in historic buildings. You would find such architectural styles in Paris, notably the Louvre. The glass and aluminum chandelier, the blue vault and the proscenium arch are some standout attributes inside that are hard to miss. San Francisco Symphony had been a regular feature at the opera house for almost fifty years until 1980 when it held its last concert at the venue.

You can purchase tickets for concerts, shows, and events at the box offices or online. Most tickets are available at the City Box Office, San Francisco Ballet Box Office, San Francisco Opera Box Office, and San Francisco Symphony Box Office. You can sign up for a tour on Monday unless it is a holiday. Tours are usually operated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adults need to pay $7 while seniors and students pay $5 for the tours starting from the entrance of Davies Symphony Hall at Grove Street. Group tours must be reserved at least two weeks in advance. You should check the calendar of events to find out if any specific show or performance interests you.
